Pete's Hamburger Stand

Pete's Hamburgers, a family-owned business in Prairie du Chien, claims to make the world's best hamburgers.  For decades, my family has agreed.  After listening to my papa and grandparents talk about these hamburgers, I first gave them a try in 2006.  When we visited Wisconsin for Cryslyn's reception, we had to stop at Pete's again.

The only thing Pete's makes is hamburgers ($4.25), though they do sell water, pop, and chips, as well as souvenirs.  The hamburgers are simmered in water with onions, which moisten the bun around the burger.  The meat is good quality, moist, and tender.
There's often a line of people waiting for burgers.  Papa ordered a dozen, so we could enjoy some the next day and bring some back to Iowa for our grandparents.  As always, enjoying Pete's burgers was a real treat!

Have you ever been to Pete's?  Where are your favorite burgers made?

    1. I don't enjoy onions on a lot of burgers (like Burger King's whopper), probably because I do not like raw(ish) onions, but Pete's onions are nice and edible. ;) Have a great week as well!

  4. Hi Bethany,
Pete's burgers sound delicious to me, and I have to say it's not easy to find a good one these days so even though I've never tried one, I'm glad somebody is making a good one. When we were in Texas a few years ago I tried a Whataburger and was NOT impressed. Go Pete.
    Have a great week!

  6. I've never heard of Pete's but would love to try them! I never heard of simmering hamburgers. The best burgers around here are the ones my hubby grills. He seasons them so well and they are yummy!

    1. Sounds good! And it's awesome that you're married to your favorite hamburger chef! You don't have to travel to another state to eat your favorite burgers!

  7. Those burgers make my mouth water! In my town we don't have that many family owned business stands that have lasted for over a century; many original buildings were destroyed after an earthquakes in the 50s-60s time line. It's a bit sad to think about.

    xoxo Morning

    1. That's too bad. We're blessed to see many family owned business and century farms in the Midwest.

  8. Pete's burgers sound great. I love food stalls that only sell one type of food because they take the care to perfect it.

    1. Well, I don't think it would work well to ship them to Europe, but if you ever do make it out this way to try them, I would love to meet you!

  11. Wow, they've been around since 1909! That is incredible. These small, independent places sometimes make the best food.

  12. I love locally owned eateries and coffee shops and books shops.
This is definitely someplace my father-in-law would have visited, when he lived there, I reckon.
    Have a Beautiful Day, Bethany!!
    Peace :)

    1. I've never reviewed on Yelp...have done a few on Trip Advisor (but not for Pete's yet at least). For now I need to catch up on life here. :)

  15. Just curious--I have now seen you refer to your "Papa" several times. Down here in the South "Papa" or "Pawpaw" are usually what folks call their grandfather. But when you use it you sound like you are referring to your father. Is that true?

Those hamburgers look delicious...even though I just ate lunch! :)

    1. Yes, my father is Papa and my grandfather is Grandpa. I think I have heard some people use "Papa"/"Pawpaw" as you mentioned, but for the majority around here father = dad, and grandfather = grandpa.

    2. That's neat Bethany. I call my father Papa too. I always enjoy meeting other "strange" folks like me. :)

  17. Hi Bethany, You slipped in a couple of posts while I wasn't paying attention. Ha ha!!! I love this post because I love hamburgers. Some folks will try to tell us hamburgers are not healthy but ... meat, bread, veggies ... how can it be all bad? I'm afraid if it is true ... You are what you eat ... I may be largely hamburger. :-) Anyway, it is difficult for me to say who makes my favorite hamburger. Currently, I don't have a place like Pete's ... a small, custom shop. I had one of those when I was growing up, it was called Topsy's. The guy who owned it was a cook who retired from the US Navy. His burger was simple but delicious: meat, lettuce, american cheese, Kraft's thousand island dressing, and a buttered bun. I kept bugging him about what the dressing was ... it was supposed to be a secret ... he finally told me. Sometimes I light up my charcoal grill and fix a Topsy burger for lunch. It is special! :-) Have a great week ahead!
